Reindeer Noses – An Alternative to Kid’s Christmas Cards

Reindeer nosesI am not a huge fan of the whole concept of kids handing out Christmas cards to all the kids in their class, it seems like an extreme waste of paper to me! Besides the kids mainly are only interested in the obligatory candy cane or lolly that is attached anyways! But if every other child is handing out cards or something then I have to come up with something for my two biggest boys to hand out. Heaven help me when all five children are at school! When I saw this idea for Reindeer Noses on Pinterest from A Personal Touch blog, I thought that this would be perfect, and it is such a cute little idea.

To make reindeer noses

I had visions of putting them in clear plastic little treat bags but I couldn’t find them to purchase anywhere, so I just used snack sized click seal plastic bags. Eight maltesers and one jaffa lolly in each bag with the little label I made up stapled over the bag. The back says Merry Christmas, and has a place to write to and from.

When I put up a photo of the bags I had made up on the Puddles and Gumboots Facebook page some people expressed an interest in having the label I made as a printable, so for anyone who wants it you can download it here - Reindeer Noses Printable (742)

So what’s your opinion on the whole kids exchanging Christmas cards or equivalent with their whole class at school?

  2. I saw this on Pinterest and thought it was a great idea! Much cuter one than just handing out Christmas cards. My Giorgia did the card thing but I’m thinking that when Annabelle starts school next year, I’ll have more time to be a bit more creative that just throwing cards in the general direction of the child ;)

  3. Oh, you did a GREAT job with them!

I have a wide streak of Grinch in me when it comes to school card-handing-outing. I just don’t do it.
I have made Teacher Gifts, though — really appreciate what the teachers have done for my kids this year.

    • Thanks Toni! I am with you on Christmas cards from kids all the way, but my Mr 5 said to me in a sad voice I cant not hand something out when everyone else is so off I went reindeer noses a making lol.

My kids have had great teachers this year too! I made up packages of shortbread and little framed quotes for them. I officially need a lie down after this week ;-)

  4. I love it!

I wonder if someone will come up with a way of doing this so the lolly-free parents can join in too?

    • Thanks Tenille. What about cherries? They are red and round. Though as Im writing this Im realising that maybe youre not Australian, and that they might not be in season where you live

  5. We did Christmas cards for master D as he loved being able to write his names in them all…all 24 of them!!

Our school had a no candy cane policy so I did lollipops as I also count find the bags to do those after I saw them on pinterest… That and hubby ate all the Maltesers before I had a chance to make them!!!

  9. Had to chuckle at Alyce’s mention of reindeer poo – although my boys would probably like that idea.
This is a great idea – I love it,
I used to like the idea of the kids giving out Christmas cards but now that we are expected to include candy canes it drives me nuts. Thats all the kids care about now.

  10. I did the whole hand out cards thing a few years back…with some Christmas cookies. Stopped last year when I couldn’t be bothered. This year…I have no idea what to do. Planning on making some peppermint bark to give to the class because, yes, you’re right the kids are more interested in the stuff they get to eat!! But, your reindeer noses looks easy and quick enough to make so that might be on my list of things to try!

  12. Thank you so much. I’m about to prepare my reindeer noses for the class :) We did reindeer food last year so I’ve been searching for an idea for this year

  13. It is sad to read that the kids are more interested in the stuff they can eat rather than xmas cards. My 6 year old is very happy to get xmas cards.. especially handmade ones but NO ONE gives a handmade card.

We have made 27 cards and this weekend my daughter is going to write her xmas wishes inside them.

I planned to add a little choccy as well.. but think I`m not going to do it .. except for a couple of best friends.
We don`t throw away cards… we use them for decorations. This giving cards for the whole class is a new thing for me. I am just used to giving cards only for friends.. so the first year we gave out only 10 cards or so. We got 27 back of course. So the next year we were more polite :) I think it is good for everybody to get a card, then no kid feels left out..

  16. I had the ‘Reindeer Noses’ pinned and was doing a search to see if anyone had a printable available already….so thanks! Exactly what I needed and very cute! I’m getting them together for my son’s preschool class. I’ll be sure to link back here when I blog about them (provided I find the time to blog about them! Christmas is coming much too fast!)

  17. Hi Kate, great idea & love the label (thanks for making it available & for free!) – plan on making a few for my nieces & nephews. Thanks again

  18. they look great. Well done for all your effort. Miss 8 in yr 3 and master 5 in prep gave cards to each classmate, which totalled 50 kids! They didn’t give any candy canes, although most in the class did. In years past I have done magic reindeer food and one prep mum made snowman soup mixes, which is cocoa. Too busy this year! Usually I make something for the teachers and aids…this year, a bottle of wine each! smiles, A
